In 2007, Vintage Perkins supplied reclaimed hemlock, milled to order, for the ceiling of a new dining hall at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The wood came from the former Edison Wood Products factory in New London, Wisconsin. Thomas Edison purchased the factory in 1917 to produce cabinets for his 1877 invention, the phonograph. In dismantling the building, the crew found a check made out to Edison himself.

“The reclaimed wood used to create the ceiling in the dining hall not only brings with it a wonderful story and aesthetic appeal, but more importantly, it speaks to our desire to incorporate green building materials whenever possible. The ceiling sets the tone for the facility and helped us reach our goal of preserving the old while creating something new.”
